My recent work, done in May 2009. Watercolour on W&N paper. This is a Red-breasted Nuthatch. The name Nuthatch comes from the British term 'hatch' meaning to hammer something apart.) Nuthatches will often take a nut, wedge it into a nook in the bark of the tree to help hold it in place and then 'hatch' it into pieces to eat. A very interesting bird to watch.
